What type of footwear for landscaping?

The bulk of the work is shoveling concrete mix and sand. Should I buy steel toe work boots or would hiking/walking boots be fine? What should I look for when purchasing the footwear?

I do the same kind of work and i use steel toe just in case something falls on my foot, and you can use your foot as a tool to hit things b/c of the steel toe. Look for slip proof souls too.

I have steel toed boots. I have had a lot of surgery on my feet so I made the decision after my last one, that I didn’t want to take the chance of injuring myself while gardening.
Would you believe that not long after I got them, I was using a post hole digger and missed–hit the end of my boot and put a good sized scar in the leather, but with no harm to me? They don’t look very ladylike on me, but I don’t care. They work, and that’s all that matters. Since then, several other things have occurred that made me know I was right in my choice of a steel toe.
PS
Look for a corrugated sole, and make sure the boot top comes up over your ankle. Get leather, not cheap vinyl material and make sure that the metal toe cap goes all of the way across the end of the boot and up at least one and one half inches from the end.
