Should FOOTWEAR count in the game scattegories for sports equipment with the letter F?

We played scattegories with my family the other night. The question was sports equipment with the letter F. My stepdad put FOOTWEAR as his answer. We argued about it for hours. Should it count?

Yes, I think it should. You use different footwear for different sports.

I’d allow it. It would be hard to play most sports without the proper footwear – golf shoes, baseball cleats, ice skates. It’s a clever answer, and the spirit of the game says you should reward those.

Hasbro is very good about providing information (parts, instruction sheets [rules], FAQs and recall info) for their products online…
The instruction sheet link for Scattergories (2003):
(A 2-page B&W detailed product overview and game instruction PDF document.)).pdf
The rules clearly state (page 2, 3rd column from left, under “RULES FOR ACCEPTABLE ANSWERS”:
“Creative answers can be acceptable. For example, if the category is SPICES/HERBS and the key letter is P, you could answer “Posh”. But if one player challenges the answer, the group must vote on its acceptability.
CHALLENGED ANSWERS:
While answers are being read, other players may challenge their acceptability. When an answer is challenged, all players (even the challenged player) votes on whether the answer is acceptable. Players who accept give a thumbs-up sign. Players who do not accept the answer give a thumbs-down sign. Majority rules. In case of a tie, the challenged player’s vote does not count.”
I’d say the answer of “footwear” is a somewhat creative one, and also Definitely applies since very few sports are played barefoot.
I’m sorry to hear that y’all “argued about it for hours” – it’s just a game and really shouldn’t be “that important”. It Should be about spending time with Family and enjoying the time and company, good sportsmanship and playing fun games!
Hope this helps and HAVE FUN!

No. Footwear is too broad. Cleats is more precise, boots are more precise, tennis shoes are more precise. All of these are a variation of footwear.
Next time you ask him, “Ok, dad, let’s go play some football. I got some high heels for you to wear. Because they ARE footwear. And you say footwear is a type of sports equipment”.
